An ironic and well-reasoned reply to Il Manifesto<\/a>\u2019s viral article, which stirred the waters of musical and cultural discourse. Here we dismantle, with a bit of wit and much field experience, eight hasty, apocalyptic or simply uninformed claims about the supposed death of the DJ.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

1.<\/span> \u201cThe figure of the DJ is obsolete. No longer needed.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Nonsense most dire:<\/strong> A cry fit for tired, blind oracles.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s debatable:<\/strong>
\nIn many lands \u2014 peripheral, underground, or dancing \u2014 the DJ still stands as herald of sound, weaver of collective journeys, holder of rhythm and bodies. \nTo gaze only upon the shop windows of consumption temples is to mistake a shadow for the sunset of the sun.<\/p>\n\n

\nClub culture shifts, mutates, migrates, reinvents. \nWhere clubs close, tents rise, factories are claimed, forests and rooftops become dance floors. \nIf a place changes shape, it does not mean the sap has dried.<\/p>\n\n

\nToday\u2019s youth revel in jungle, hyperpop, ambient, techno, hard trance, glitch, remixed Arabic sounds with UK Garage. \nThey are fluid, hybrid, unbound \u2014 beware those who seek \u201ca single voice\u201d for the now.<\/p>\n\n

5.<\/span> \u201cAll London clubs will close by 2029.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Lazy foresight:<\/strong> A forecast by prophets of doom, blind to metamorphosis.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s debatable:<\/strong>
\nLondon folds and unfolds, closes and erupts. \nClubbing survives like water \u2014 slipping elsewhere, taking the shape of its container. \nDIY scenes, raves, festivals and pop-ups are already building 2030.<\/p>\n\n

6.<\/span> \u201cDJs play everywhere now, even in supermarkets.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Unjust generalisation:<\/strong> Mistaking ambient noise for symphony.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s debatable:<\/strong>
\nA DJ in an unusual venue might be trivial… or poetic. \nIt\u2019s the gesture, not the location. \nPerformance may bloom even in a discount aisle \u2014 or fall flat in a superclub if hollow and commercialised.<\/p>\n\n

7.<\/span> \u201cEveryone plays the same music.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Auditory absurdity:<\/strong> The weary echo of those who only hear the familiar.<\/p>\n

\nThere are those who dig, re-edit, dismantle and recombine. \nWho use cassettes, vinyl, field recordings, handmade tools. \nThat many follow the Top 10 doesn\u2019t mean life ends at Beatport.<\/p>\n\n

8.<\/span> \u201cDance is no longer relevant.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Misjudged epoch:<\/strong> A statement from those who\u2019ve forgotten their bodies.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s debatable:<\/strong>
\nDance is alive, ritualistic, urgent. \nIn queer clubbing, free parties, migrant sound systems, post-pandemic open circles. \nThose who claim otherwise perhaps haven\u2019t set foot on a dancefloor in years.<\/p>\n\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n

The DJ lives on and struggles with us. \nThey\u2019re not always onstage. \nSometimes at the side, sometimes in the middle \u2014 sometimes unseen. \nBut if your body starts to move like it hasn\u2019t in years\u2026 chances are, they\u2019re there.<\/p>\n\n
